I4 - Narrative Illustration

Project Description:
This illustration project is going to be a series of pages that tell a story or narrative about how a polar bear and her cubs are separated due to polar sea ice melting. I want it to have an emotional impact on the viewer which will encourage humans to make positive choices in order to protect our planet and its wildlife.

Sender:
Animals/Wildlife
The National Wildlife Federation
(The National Wildlife Federation is dedicated to preserving animals in the United States and works with local agencies in the 48 contiguous states. It is one of the largest environmental organizations, with over 4 million members participating in grass-roots efforts on a variety of wildlife issues.)

Audience:
All human beings, especially to those who are not making environmentally wise decisions.

Message:
Humans need to be more aware of how their everyday actions effect the earth and especially its wildlife.

Purpose:
There is already undeniable evidence that animals, birds and plants are being affected by climate change and global warming in both their distribution and behavior. Unless greenhouse gas emissions are severely reduced, climate change could cause a quarter of land animals, birdlife and plants to become extinct. This illustration will be a call-to-action for humans to make wiser choices for the environment.

Specifications:

6 pgs. minimum (three spreads)

F. How Rising Temperatures Impact Polar Bears

1. A polar bear and her two cubs rise from their sleep with bellies growling since their last meal was days ago. Their main food source is seals which are scarce due to rapidly melting sea ice. The ice is melting because of the rising temperatures in our earth's atmosphere and the seals depend on sea ice in order to hunt for fish. In other words, if there is no sea ice, there are no seals, and thus, no polar bears.

2. Seeking food, the cubs and their mother walk across what is left of the quickly shifting sea ice.

3. Mama bear spots a seal in the distance although a big gap in the ice lay between her and her prey. Normally she would never leave her younglings alone on the sea ice but she fears there may not be a better opportunity for food before it is too late.

4. After a little while, mama bear catches the seal but when she looks back for her cubs, the only thing in view is a massive iceberg.

5. Panicking, she jumps in the water to search for them.

6. Meanwhile, the fearful cubs wait, holding each other tightly. Will their mother ever find them? That may be up to you! Situations like this happen more frequently due to quickly melting sea ice. When the sea ice melts, it shifts more and makes it difficult for polar bears to find food.

B. Help us save our planet and its wildlife by making more environmentally friendly choices today. Your decisions truly have an impact!
