Editorial Illustration Semiotics
My
editorial illustration is both an icon and index sign. On one hand, it is an
icon because it actually portrays or resembles a combination of different kinds
of junk foods humans like to eat. On the other hand, the way it is mashed
together to look like an overweight individual eating its own arm makes it an
index sign as well. At first glance, the viewer may crave a donut or hamburger
but when they realize it resembles a human figure eating itself they may cringe
and realize the deeper meaning of the image. This illustration is a sign that
warns us we need to be careful of what we eat because we are, in a lot of ways,
what we eat. In other words, if we are consuming things that are bad for us, we
are ultimately eating ourselves.
