This
illustration was created by Sue Gent, who I discovered through the Association
of Illustrators website. Gent has been commissioned by several nature and
wildlife organizations to design illustrations for magazines covers and
events which isn't surprising because animals and scenery in her work
are common subjects. She also most likely used a vector image
creation software like Adobe Illustrator to create this piece. She is
based in Bristol and created this for a CD cover for a band called Doeray also
based in the UK.
Doeray's
music is a mixture of different styles such as Indie, soul,
blues and country, which in my opinion is becoming increasingly popular in our
youth and pop culture. Moreover, the intended audience is most likely directed
at young females partly because of the feminine colors and heart in the
image, as well as the female vocalists. The purpose of the
illustration is to portray and incorporate all of these musical
styles into an effective, cohesive product that attracts its intended viewers
and listeners.
I
think it was successful because the stars and outdoorsy elements like the doe -
which is fitting since the band’s name is “Doeray” - and mountains can relate
to country themes and "bluesy" styles. It also has a dreamy and
whimsical mood with the stars and swirly clouds and lines. Overall, the
symbolic elements and symmetry tie in together well which creates a balanced
and orderly piece. I chose this image because it immediately attracted my
attention with its bold, and yet intricate details, color scheme, and stark
symmetry. I also love anything to do with nature and the outdoors.
